Boundless Compassion in Palliative Care Earns National Recognition for UAB Nurse

Birmingham, AL – December 19, 2025

Jackie Palmore, RN, BSN, CHPN, a veteran palliative care nurse at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Medical Center, has been honored with the prestigious 2025 Hastings Center Cunniff-Dixon Nursing Award for her extraordinary dedication to end-of-life care.

The award, presented by The Hastings Center and the Cunniff-Dixon Foundation, recognizes nurses who exemplify exceptional compassion and skill in supporting patients nearing the end of life. Each recipient receives a $25,000 prize. Palmore is one of three nurses selected nationwide for 2025.

As Clinical Coordinator for the UAB Center for Palliative and Supportive Care, Palmore has dedicated 38 years to nursing, with the majority focused on palliative, supportive, and hospice care. She played a key role in establishing UAB’s 12-bed inpatient Palliative and Comfort Care Unit in 2004, building the inpatient consult service, and forming the interdisciplinary palliative care team.

For more than two decades, Palmore has led the unit with unwavering compassion, modeling team-based care and advancing palliative practices across the hospital. She was the first nurse at UAB to achieve national certification in palliative nursing and recently completed the institution’s Pain and Addiction Scholars program.

Notably, Palmore extended her expertise beyond traditional settings by pioneering palliative care services within the Alabama Department of Corrections in 2001, creating the state’s first hospice program for incarcerated individuals.

As a faculty member of the UAB Palliative Care Leadership Center, affiliated with the Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC), she has trained over 50 hospice and palliative care teams across the country.

The Cunniff-Dixon Foundation praised Palmore’s lifelong commitment to compassionate care, highlighting how her work embodies the award’s mission to enrich provider-patient relationships at the end of life.
